Ask for “the fastest car in the world” and you can get several correct answers. The confusion is not just marketing. Some records use one run, some require two directions, some mean production cars, some mean open-top cars, and the absolute land-speed record belongs to a jet-powered machine that is nothing like a road car.
So here is the 2026 speed conversation with the rules attached.
YANGWANG U9 Xtreme · 496.22 km/h
BYD’s luxury brand says the electric U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h (308.4 mph) at ATP Papenburg in Germany in September 2025. Production is limited to 30 units. On a pure maximum-speed run, that moved the benchmark beyond Bugatti’s 2019 Chiron Super Sport 300+ figure.
Koenigsegg Agera RS · 447.19 km/h average
In 2017, Koenigsegg ran the Agera RS in both directions on a closed public road in Nevada. The average was 447.19 km/h (277.87 mph). The two-direction format is why this older number remains useful when people argue about record methodology.
Tuatara · 295 mph
SSC’s 2020 331-mph claim became controversial. The company later returned with more transparent instrumentation. In May 2022, SSC reported a 295.0 mph (474.8 km/h) run recorded with Racelogic VBOX systems and additional GPS logging.
Bugatti W16 Mistral · 453.91 km/h
Bugatti’s record category is different again. In November 2024, the W16 Mistral World Record Car reached 453.91 km/h (282 mph), officially confirmed as a new top-speed record for an open-top car.
Thrust SSC · 1,227.985 km/h
If road legality and production are removed from the question, everything above looks slow. Guinness lists Andy Green’s 1997 Thrust SSC run at 763.035 mph — faster than sound. It is a jet-powered land-speed vehicle, not a production automobile.
Always ask “fastest under which rule?”
In 2026, the U9 Xtreme owns the headline-grabbing production-car maximum. But the Agera RS still illustrates the classic two-way method; the Mistral owns the open-top category; and Thrust SSC remains in another universe entirely. Speed records become clearer the moment the category appears next to the number.
