Feeling exhausted does not automatically mean you have insomnia. Sleep deficiency can come from simply not allowing enough hours for sleep, sleeping at the wrong biological time, getting poor-quality sleep, or having a sleep disorder that repeatedly interrupts the night. The first useful step is identifying which problem you actually have.
You are regularly giving sleep less time than it needs
NHLBI describes sleep debt as accumulated sleep loss. If you need roughly seven to eight hours but repeatedly get five or six, the missing time adds up. Long workdays, late scrolling, caregiving and early alarms can create a sleep problem without any failure of the body’s ability to sleep.
You are trying to sleep when your body clock wants wakefulness
Shift work, jet lag and highly irregular schedules can push sleep against the circadian system. NHLBI notes that light and darkness help synchronize the body clock, which is why timing and light exposure matter when the schedule itself is the problem.
Enough time in bed can still produce a tired morning
Repeated awakenings, alcohol, pain, environmental disruption and some medical conditions can fragment sleep. If you sleep a long time but routinely wake unrefreshed, quantity alone may not explain the problem.
Snoring, gasping and persistent daytime sleepiness deserve attention
NHLBI advises discussing ongoing daytime sleepiness, unrefreshing sleep, trouble adapting to shift work, loud snoring or waking while gasping with a healthcare professional. Sleep studies can help diagnose conditions such as sleep apnea and other disorders.
Keep a sleep diary before guessing
For one or two weeks, record bedtime, wake time, awakenings, naps and how alert you feel during the day. Patterns become easier to see when they are written down rather than reconstructed from memory.
Tired is a symptom, not a diagnosis
If the problem is not enough opportunity, protect more time. If the timing is wrong, work on the schedule. If you have enough opportunity but still cannot sleep or stay alert, get the problem evaluated rather than stacking more bedtime hacks on top of it.
