The World Cup construction cycle made Qatar synonymous with megaprojects. In 2026, the next phase is less about one deadline and more about long-term tourism, urban development, energy and infrastructure.
That makes status labels essential: ongoing, starting, completed and proposed are not interchangeable.
Projects with a real development track
Simaisma
Qatari Diar lists the eight-million-square-metre project as ongoing. Planned components include 7 km of beachfront, tourism zones, resorts, a marina, golf, residences and a large entertainment component.
Lusail
Lusail remains listed as ongoing by Qatari Diar. The 38-square-kilometre master development combines residential, business, hospitality, entertainment and island districts.
North Field expansion
QatarEnergy’s giant LNG expansion moves into production phases in 2026 and beyond, increasing national LNG capacity through North Field East, South and West programmes.
New 2026 infrastructure packages
Ashghal awarded QAR12 billion of new contracts in late 2025, with projects scheduled to commence from Q1 2026, including roads, drainage and public buildings.
Simaisma is the project travelers should watch most closely
Unlike industrial or road infrastructure, Simaisma is explicitly built around visitors and leisure. Qatari Diar says the plan spans 16 tourism zones and includes resort districts, restaurants, retail and a yacht marina.
Its scale means the eventual destination will not function like one resort opening on one date. Expect phases, individual operators and facilities to arrive on different schedules.
Qatar is building a second narrative
The common thread is diversification of capacity rather than a single global-event deadline.
Do not book a trip around a rendering
The next Qatar is being built in layers
Tourism projects are expanding the coast, Lusail continues to mature, public infrastructure keeps moving and the energy sector is entering another enormous expansion cycle.
