In June 2019, Facebook announced a digital wallet called Calibra for a new blockchain-based currency called Libra. The wallet was supposed to appear in Messenger, WhatsApp and as a standalone app in 2020.
Neither Libra nor that original wallet reached the world in the form Facebook described.
How Libra became Diem — and then ended
June 2019 · Libra + Calibra announced
Facebook presented Calibra as a new subsidiary building a wallet for Libra, a planned global digital currency.
2020 · Calibra becomes Novi
The wallet name changed. Later in 2020, Libra itself was renamed Diem.
2021 · The ambition narrows
Diem shifted toward the United States and a dollar-linked stablecoin structure while regulators continued to scrutinize the project.
January 2022 · Diem sells its assets
The Diem Association announced that it had sold its intellectual property and payment-network assets to Silvergate.
2022 · The association winds down
Diem’s own CEO said the regulatory path had made it clear the project could not move ahead.
Afterward · Meta moves on
Meta continued payment products such as Meta Pay, but there is no launched Facebook/Meta currency called Libra or Diem.
A social network proposing money is not a normal startup
Facebook already had billions of users
Regulators had to consider what rapid adoption could mean for monetary and financial systems.
Payments add sensitive data
Facebook’s existing privacy controversies made the trust question impossible to separate from the technology.
The design kept changing
The project moved from a broad global-currency vision toward more conventional stablecoin structures.
Payments are heavily regulated
Diem ultimately said federal regulatory dialogue made clear that the project could not proceed.
The project failed; the questions did not
Stablecoins, digital wallets and tokenized payments continued growing elsewhere. Libra’s significance is partly that it forced policymakers to confront what happens when a giant technology platform tries to build money-like infrastructure for a global user base.
Libra became one of tech’s most famous projects that never launched as promised
The names changed from Libra to Diem and from Calibra to Novi.
The core lesson survived: building a currency is not merely a software launch.
