Global tourism set another post-pandemic record in 2025, with UN Tourism estimating 1.52 billion international tourist arrivals worldwide.
But a responsible “most visited countries” list needs one caveat up front: national agencies publish different measures and the fully harmonized international table lags the fastest national releases. Here are the leaders we can verify from current 2025 data, with the metric stated instead of hidden.
The countries drawing tourism at enormous scale
France · 102 million foreign visitors
France remained the world’s leading destination by the national figure reported for 2025, improving on the already exceptional Olympic year of 2024.
Spain · 96.8 million international tourists
Spain’s INE reported another record year, up 3.2% from 2024. The scale also intensifies the country’s debate over housing, crowding and how to spread demand beyond the busiest destinations.
United States · 68.3 million international visitors
The U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office now uses 68.3 million international visitors as its 2025 baseline, confirming the United States remained one of the world’s largest destination markets even as demand softened.
Türkiye · about 64 million visitors
Türkiye’s official tourism promotion platform reported about 64 million visitors for 2025. As with other national releases, the wording of the metric matters when comparing countries.
Japan · 42.68 million visitor arrivals
JNTO recorded 42,683,600 arrivals in 2025, up 15.8% and a new annual record.
International travel did not merely recover — it grew past 2019
UN Tourism said 2025 international arrivals grew about 4%, while the first quarter of 2026 still showed growth despite greater geopolitical uncertainty.
Connectivity is as important as attractions
Depth + geography
Paris, coast, mountains, rural regions and a central position inside Europe create multiple reasons to enter the country.
Sun + cities + airlift
Its scale comes from combining Mediterranean leisure with heavyweight city and cultural tourism.
Continental variety
Major gateway cities, national parks, entertainment destinations and business travel all feed the total.
Rapid growth
Japan’s 2025 record shows how quickly a destination can move when demand, currency conditions and air capacity align.
“Visitors” and “tourists” are not always the same column
The figures above are deliberately labeled with the metric used by each source. For an exact all-country league table, use the latest harmonized UN Tourism database rather than combining national releases as though every statistical system were identical.
Travel demand remains huge — and so does the pressure it creates
Record arrivals are economically powerful, but they also force the world’s busiest destinations to think harder about seasonality, infrastructure, housing and visitor concentration.
