Facebook’s follower system changed enough that old 2019 screenshots are misleading. Meta is gradually moving public followers toward Professional Mode for personal profiles, while friends continue to follow one another automatically unless they unfollow.
Current desktop path
Open your Facebook profile
Use the profile whose followers you want to inspect.
Choose More below the cover photo
Meta’s current Help Center routes the follower list through the profile navigation.
Open Friends
This area can contain the follower view.
Choose Followers
Meta says this list shows followers who are not already your Facebook friends.
If Followers is missing, check whether you actually have public/non-friend followers
The option may not appear when there is no applicable follower list.
Facebook friends are different
When you become Facebook friends with someone, Meta says that person automatically follows you. But the Followers list described in current Help Center guidance shows people who follow you and are not already your friends. That means it is not a complete list of every friend whose Feed can contain your posts.
Professional Mode is becoming the route for public followers
Friends are the default follower audience
Meta says default profiles are gradually losing the old Public follower setting.
Allows non-friends to follow
Turning on Professional Mode sets Who can follow me to Public.
Meta is migrating profiles
Some users may be automatically moved to Professional Mode to retain public followers.
You can still manage audience settings
Follower ability does not mean every post has to be public.
A different setting
Facebook also lets you control the audience that can see people and Pages you follow. That setting lives under Audience and visibility → Followers and public content. Do not confuse “who follows me” with “who can see the accounts I follow.”
The follower count and follower list are not the same thing as your friend list
Friends generally follow automatically. The visible Followers list is focused on non-friend followers.
If you want a public audience beyond friends in 2026, Professional Mode is increasingly the relevant profile setting.
