In 2019, Google introduced a “Stay Safer” feature in parts of the Middle East and other markets that could warn a passenger when a driver deviated from the suggested route by more than 500 meters. That feature generated exactly the headline you would expect: Google Maps can tell you if your taxi goes off-route.
Seven years later, the broader safety story is less about one alert and more about location sharing, trip-progress sharing, live disruption data and route awareness.
The off-route alert was real
Google’s own Middle East announcement described an alert when a driver moved more than 500 meters away from the suggested route. From the same safety screen, users could share their live trip with friends or family.
The safety tools you can verify today
Share destination, ETA and current location
Google Maps Help documents Share trip progress during navigation by car, walking or bicycle.
Share live location for a chosen period
You choose who can see your location and for how long.
Trusted contacts can set arrival/departure notifications
When location sharing is active, Google Maps can notify someone when you arrive at or leave a chosen place.
Real-time route information keeps expanding
Google says Maps continuously incorporates road updates, crashes and construction reports into navigation.
A simple safety routine that does not depend on one feature
Check the destination before the car moves
A wrong pin creates confusion that looks exactly like a wrong route.
Start navigation on your own phone
You can compare the route without confronting the driver over every alternate street.
Share trip progress with someone you trust
ETA and live progress are more useful than sending a screenshot before departure.
Watch the pattern, not one turn
Traffic, road closures and pickup restrictions can legitimately create different routing.
If you feel unsafe, prioritize getting to a safe public place
A mapping app is information, not emergency protection.
Safety features share data — by design
Live location can be extremely useful. It is also personal information. Google lets users choose the people and duration, and sharing can be stopped at any time.
The 2019 headline was about one clever alert. The 2026 toolkit is broader.
The off-route alert was a genuine Google Maps safety feature in selected markets.
Today, the most consistently documented tools are live location and trip-progress sharing. They are less dramatic than a warning siren — and often more useful.
